The Grandpa (and Grandma) Sweater

This pattern is relatively simple. A cabled band is folded to create the shawl collar neckline and upper body shaping, then the body is worked in stockinette and 2 x 2 rib for a comfortable fit. I have included directions for both male and female dogs and a range of sizes from XXS- Large. The pattern can be downloaded here, and you can follow along with videos below for some of the more complicated steps. I hope you enjoy knitting this for your furry friend. <3

Getting started: provisional cast on

the provisional cast on allows us to have knitted loops on both ends of the collar- by casting on with what is essentially a chain stitch and some scrap yarn, we can then pull out that first row and transfer the loops to your needles.

Working the cable:

This cable is a simple three part braid- we will bring the side strands over the center strand in an alternating pattern. Just like braiding hair…

Removing the Cast on:

Here you can see how to remove that cast on.

Join the Collar and Pick up Body Stitches

This is the most tricky piece of the pattern- each individual step isn’t hard, but the whole process can seem intimidating until you see it done. So here you go!

Short Rows: Working your Wraps and Turns

To achieve that nice shape at the yoke, we are using short rows. I love the nuanced shape you can get using this technique. The version I like to use adds the step of slipping the stitch after the wrap and turn and doing a yarn over that stitch- this creates a softer angle. Maybe I’ll add a bit more about this in another project.
